A train derailment is expected to cause issues for people in Masterton today.

It happened on Sunday afternoon while the locomotive was travelling to collect passengers. No passengers were on the train at the time.

"Re-railing the locomotive may take some time as it will need to be lifted by crane," KiwiRail acting chief operations officer Henare Clarke told RNZ.

"It is hoped this can be completed tomorrow to allow services to resume."

All morning services will be replaced by a bus between Masterton and Solway stations. Trains will still run between Renall St and Wellington Stations.
