A child has been found dead in a pond in Gore.

Police have confirmed the child was a three-year-old boy.

His death will be investigated by police on behalf of the coroner.

Police were alerted to the disappearance at about 9:30pm on Tuesday evening.

Family members had already begun searching for the child along with friends and neighbours.

After arriving on the scene, Police and LandSAR began a search of the area. They found the child unresponsive in a pond at about 11:15pm.

Unfortunately he could not be resuscitated.

Police have thanked the community members who volunteered to help find the child, and given their condolences to the grieving family.

The tragedy comes just weeks after a toddler drowned on an Ashburton farm.

Grace Marie Griffin was found unresponsive in a body of water on January 6, and later died in Christchurch Hospital.
