The child who went missing in the water at a Raglan beach has died.

The child was found in the harbour at about 5pm.

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the child but were unsuccessful.

Emergency services were called to Ngaranui beach at 3.30pm on Thursday and police and Coastguard began a frantic search.

St John were in attendance and a rescue helicopter was deployed.

Stuff reported that the child is seven years old.

A witness told them her parents were watching and turned their backs for a moment, when they looked back she was gone.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand northern region chief executive Matt Williams told Stuff the incident was "a prompt for people to be aware of the conditions and always keep your kids within arms reach".
