The search for a missing fisherman off one of Auckland's west coast beaches has entered its third day.

Korean man Myung Kang, 57, was last seen at Bethells Beach on Saturday.

His family became concerned that he hadn't come home from his fishing trip and reported him missing to police late on Sunday night, Waitemata Police Detective Senior Sergeant Callum McNeill says.

A large-scale search for Mr Kang is continuing on Tuesday, with search and rescue teams, life guards and a police helicopter involved in the efforts to find him.

Police have also been searching for his vehicle, a white 2011 Toyota Prius, which has been found at the Bethells Beach car park.

Police are appealing for any sightings of Mr Kang.

"Saturday was a hot day and a large number of people took the opportunity to spend some time at Bethells Beach, so we are hopeful that someone has seen Mr Kang with his fishing gear," Detective Senior Sergeant McNeill says.

"Police appreciate that this is a very difficult and worrying time for Mr Kang's family and we are providing them with support."

Members of the public who may have any information are asked to contact Waitemata Police on 09 839 0697.
