A man is dead after a kitesurfing accident in Tauranga.

He was in Fergusson Park just after 4pm on Sunday afternoon, preparing his kite on land before taking it into the water.

Tragically, the kite was caught by a strong gust of wind, taking him with it. It crashed some time later.

Emergency services provided the man with medical attention, but he died at the scene.

Police say Victim Support has been notified and the man's death will be referred to the Coroner.

In 2017 a kitesurfer drowned off the coast of Muriwai while trying to retrieve his board.

In 2004 an American man died while kitesurfing at a Hawke's Bay beach after a gust picked him off the ground and slammed him into neighbouring trees.
