Man dies after being rear-ended at Auckland intersection

A man is dead after his car was rear-ended at an intersection in east Auckland.

He was waiting at the traffic lights on Botany Rd and Ti Rakau Drive in Golflands at about 5pm on Monday. Two other cars were in line ahead of his vehicle.

A fourth car was driving down Botany Rd at high speed and failed to stop for the intersection. It hit the back of the man's car at high speed, causing a four-car pile-up.

Inspector Cornell Kluessien says the force of the impact shunted the cars forward about 15 metres.

Emergency services quickly arrived and pulled the man from his car to perform CPR. It was unsuccessful and he died of his injuries.

Inspector Kluessian says the occupant of the car which hit the others was trapped in the wreckage and had to be removed by the fire brigade.

One person in a Holden sedan was also injured and taken to Middlemore Hospital.

The busy road was closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.
