A man who went missing after swimming at Gisborne's Kaiti Beach on Wednesday night was never in any danger, it turns out.
He was last seen at 9:45pm when he entered the water. He was out swimming for an hour-and-a-half and didn't get home until 11:30pm.
He had seen the helicopter, but didn't realise it was looking for him.
On Thursday night the man heard about the search for a missing swimmer, realised it might be him and contacted police to let him know he was okay.
Police thanked Surf Life Saving, Coast Guard and search and rescue volunteers for their assistance.
