Police are on the hunt for a motorcyclist who was caught riding at almost 200km/h in south Dunedin.

The rider of an Aprilia SV1000 motorcycle was clocked by a speed camera travelling at 199km/h on State Highway 1, near Waihola on Saturday.

"The speed this rider reached is beyond dangerous, the risk they posed to themselves and other road users is unimaginable," Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen says.

"Had they crashed they would have killed themselves and possibly other road users.

"This behaviour is unacceptable and puts others at risk."

Any members of the public with information about this incident are urged to contact their local station or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55 111.
