Second arrest over Kawakawa home invasion of elderly woman

Police have arrested a second person following an investigation into a home invasion of an elderly woman in Kawakawa this week.

An unnamed woman, 40, has been charged with aggravated burglary and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Det Snr Sgt Rhys Johnston said on Tuesday.

The woman will appear in the Kaikohe District Court on Tuesday afternoon.

A 24-year-old woman was also charged earlier this week with aggravated burglary and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She was also expected to appear in court on Tuesday, facing six other burglary charges in relation to previous incidents.

A 90-year-old woman was attacked in her Kawakawa home on January 9 by two young female offenders, police said.

It's understood the offenders knocked on the woman's door and asked for fuel before assaulting her, stealing property and fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

The crime was met with a wave of outrage from locals, prompting police to issue a warning against vigilante justice
