'Shotguns and machetes': Armed police investigate Lower Hutt incident

Police are investigating a "disorder incident" in Lower Hutt that witnesses claim involved shotguns and machetes.

The incident on George St, Stokes Valley was reported at about 3:45pm on Sunday afternoon. The area has been cordoned off and officers are searching houses to find those who are believed to be involved.

As a precaution, armed police are also on the scene.

Stokes Valley locals, writing in a Facebook community group, have called the incident a "gang fight" and claim shots were fired.

"Huge group fighting in the park and over the road," one woman wrote.

"Shotguns and machetes. Quiet now but still wouldn't risk it."

"Keep your families clear," another advised.

One witness said the people involved in the altercation were "all patched members".

Police say there have been no reports of injury but advise the public to avoid the George St area while they continue their investigation.
