Two teenagers too young to have a driver's licence have been arrested after police used road spikes to stop their vehicle in Gisborne.

The silver Honda Torneo was spotted on Tiniroto Rd at around 1:25pm on Wednesday.

"The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated," a police spokesperson says.

But Police lost sight of the fleeing vehicle and the pursuit was abandoned, until it was spotted on Brunton Rd a short time later.

"Road spikes were successfully deployed and the vehicle came to a stop on Bell Rd. The two occupants were taken into Police custody."

A 15-year-old has been charged with driving and dishonesty offences and will appear in the Gisborne Youth Court on Thursday.

A 13-year-old will appear in Youth Court next month on a charge of unlawfully getting in to a vehicle.
