Newshub cameraman Jeff Aldridge says it's believed a couple of families were having coffee under one of the trees when it collapsed.

He said the large poplar tree was "totally uprooted".

Children are believed to be among the injured.

A spokesperson for Shotover Jet said the injured were not customers.

Three rescue helicopters were sent to the scene and firefighters helped to extricate the patients from under the tree.
