Traffic halts after car flips on Auckland's northern motorway

A car has flipped on Auckland's northern motorway south of Silverdale, leading to a mass emergency service callout.

The accident happened around 11:30am on Sunday, blocking lanes and causing delays. Video taken by a witness shows the car trapped on its roof like an upturned beetle.

"There were at least two fire engines there, emergency services were talking to what looked like the people from the car, they seemed pretty distraught," they told Newshub.

"The car was flipped over. Traffic was backed up for kilometres in both directions."

The New Zealand Transport Agency warns motorists to expect "significant delays" in both directions.

"Due to a crash between Millwater and Silverdale Southbound, lanes are BLOCKED," it tweeted.

Police say there were no major injuries.
