A woman and her sister were allegedly assaulted on Friday afternoon at an Auckland shopping mall.

The woman, who has not been named, is from Colombia and has been living in New Zealand since 2016.

She had her sister visiting, and wanted to show her the country. The woman told Stuff she and her sister were at Dress Smart in Onehunga when a couple came up behind them.

"I didn't realise at first that this couple was so close behind us, but they pushed my sister while we were walking which made her quite upset," the woman said.

She says she tried to ignore the push, as she didn't want to cause any trouble, and thought it may have been accidental.

The sisters carried on, but the couple confronted them again. This time, it was head on.

Frightened by the confrontation, the woman started filming on her cell phone

"The man grabbed my phone and suddenly the woman grabbed me by the hair and the man hit me in the face," she told Stuff.

The woman says both she and her sister were screaming for help, but no one came to their aide.

Both assailants ran, and the sisters followed to try and get pictures to identify them. The woman says that the male attacker then hit her in the face again, and pushed her sister to the ground.

She has a black eye and bruising to her face and arms.

Dress Smart centre manager Gaylene Powell says she is aware the incident occurred, and Dress Smart is cooperating with police by providing CCTV footage of the assault.

Police have confirmed that a 23-year-old man has been arrested and is facing two counts of male assaults female. He is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court on February 8.
