Whanganui Mayor calls Tuesday stabbing 'tragic and horrific'

The Whanganui Mayor says he's saddened by a mass stabbing incident in his town, calling it a "tragic and horrific outcome".

Police have launched a homicide investigation after an incident in Wicksteed St on Tuesday where one person died and five others were hospitalised.

Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall said police were confident that it was not a gang incident.

He said it sounded like it was a domestic incident, which started in a housing complex and spilled out onto the street.

Mr McDouall said it was "a tragedy for the people involved and also for the people in Whanganui".

He said seeing Whanganui in the news for an incident like this was awful.

"This can happen anywhere but it shakes you when you hear Whanganui at the tail end of a bad story."
