Woman photographed driving on Auckland motorway while on phone, child on lap steering the car

An Auckland woman has captured shocking images of a child sitting on the lap of a woman on a motorway and seemingly steering the car, while the driver scrolls on her cellphone.

The motorist, who did not want to be named, said the incident occurred on Thursday at around 5pm, during peak traffic on Auckland's Southern Motorway.

She told the NZME that a woman in a car next to her had her head down and was on her phone while a child sat on her lap with both hands on the steering wheel.

"She moved into the left lane and I got alongside her and I saw her texting on the phone and the kid driving the car, she wasn't even holding the steering wheel," she said.

She said she had previously seen the child moving around the car and "play-fighting" before they jumped into the driver's lap.

While the witness says she was driving herself, she said she felt she needed to take the photos to warn other drivers.

"I grabbed my phone and took a photo but I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"Obviously it's not the first time she's done it because the kid knew what he was doing."

Newshub has attempted to contact the woman.
