Armed police attend New Plymouth 'family harm' incident in hours-long standoff

Armed police are surrounding a New Plymouth suburb after a "family harm incident" was reported.

Officers have been at the intersection of Paritutu Rd and Marama Crescent in Spotswood since Sunday morning.

Police say a domestic dispute was reported at 10:15am. The Armed Offenders Squad was sent to the scene as a precaution.

One person is still at the address, while a second person left the scene earlier on Sunday afternoon.

Cordons are currently in place at the intersection of Paritutu Rd and Ngamotu Rd, the intersection of Tumai St and Marama Crescent, and on Paritutu Rd south of Simons St.

Residents within the cordon are advised to contact police if they need to go home.

Police were initially thought to have been attending a hostage situation on the normally quiet street.
