Best thing since sliced bread? Jacinda Ardern's Valentine's Day gift for Clarke Gayford

Clarke Gayford has revealed what he received from his high-profile Valentine.

Jacinda Ardern didn't buy him flowers - but her gift definitely involved flour.

The Fish of the Day host posted a photo of a packaged loaf from Nature's Fresh, alongside an empty plate that bore the tell-tale crumbs of a well-enjoyed sandwich.

"For Valentine's I got this loaf of plain white bread," he wrote.

While not quite as romantic as chocolates, Gayford revealed his stomach was too upset to eat much else - and not because he's so in love.

"It might not seem like much, but considering the food poisoning I'm coming out the other side of, it is EVERYTHING."

His fellow Twitter users helpfully chimed in with their tips for a queasy stomach.

Auckland Council urban planner Ludo Campbell-Reid recommended flat Coca-Cola, while others argued in favour of the health benefits of ginger ale and raspberry cordial.

Some gave Gayford ideas for future sandwich fillings, ranging from whitebait and butter to marmite and chips.

Australian journalist Deborah Richards joked the humble loaf was "all a Prime Minister has time for".

The Valentine's Day announcement was Gayford's first tweet since November.

The 41-year-old has been busy being a stay-at-home dad to seven-month-old Neve who has started teething, her mother revealed in a speech to Parliament on Monday.
