Blaze guts two houses in south Auckland

Fire fighters in south Auckland battled a blaze on Saturday which appears to have spread in the wind from one house to another.

According to Darren Gussey, senior station officer at the Papatoetoe fire station, it appears the fire spread from one single level home to another on Swaffield Rd in Papatoetoe.

"It started in one house and due to the nature of the fire, it spread quickly," he told Newshub.

"We have got a south-westerly wind today, and the second house that caught on fire was in that direction."

He said there had been multiple reports of the two houses on fire and upon inspection by officers; more appliances had to be called in to help extinguish the blaze which has damaged the houses.

One person was initially believed to be unaccounted for, but Mr Gussey said all people from the properties had been safely located.

Police are in attendance and specialists are on site to find a cause of the fire, although the houses are believed to have had working smoke alarms.
