A driver has been killed in Hawke's Bay after colliding with an oncoming truck during a police pursuit.

On Thursday evening, police located a vehicle of interest heading south on State Highway 5 at Eskdale in Hawke's Bay.

Hawke's Bay Acting Area Commander Insp Jeanette Park said police had been searching for the vehicle's driver for most of the day due to "concerns" for him.

After failing to stop and the manner of his driving, a pursuit was initiated, said Insp Park.

"After a short period of time the vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming truck."

The driver died at the scene, while the truck driver was not injured.

Insp Park said police conduct a constant risk assessment during pursuits "which are inherently fast-moving and unpredictable".

No further details about the crash or the pursuit would be released as they were being investigated by police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
