E. coli in water supply threatens Martinborough Fair

A boil water notice is in place in South Wairarapa after E. coli was found in a town's water supply.

The South Wairarapa District Council says the notice has been issued for anyone connected to Martinborough's water supply.

Water is being trucked in for people to drink at Saturday's Martinborough Fair as the water supply is contaminated.

Organiser Ian Gregor told Newshub there will be plenty of water to go around for the fair's expected 25,000 attendees.

"We've got about a dozen 200-litre containers with taps on at strategic places around the fair area, there is a large milk tanker sized water tanker available to come and top those up."

But he's not expecting there to be too much need for it.

"Luckily the day's turned out to be mild, not the hot temperatures we've been experiencing recently, so hopefully the demand won't be as high as it may have been earlier."

Temperatures in the area are expected to reach 21degC on Saturday.
