Fire breaks out on hill in Wellington's Wadestown

A scrub fire has broken out on a hill in the Wellington suburb of Wadestown on Saturday afternoon.

The blaze is burning in the Te Ahumairangi Hill near Thorndon.

A Newshub reporter nearby says the fire is on a very hard to reach part of the hill. At this stage it's believed there's no threat to homes, however residents say it's quite difficult to access the area.

Images posted to social media show the scrub fire sending a thick blanket of smoke towards downtown Wellington.

"I can smell this in the CBD. Lots of sirens," one person commented on Twitter.

Emergency services say they are reacting to the blaze.

"Police were made aware of a fire in Wadestown at 3:50pm," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"The location we have is Weld St. Police are responding."

"As many Wellingtonians have seen, Fire and Emergency crews are responding to an incident in the Town Belt, near Wadestown," Fire and Emergency tweeted.

"Thanks for all your calls to 111. We have six appliances and specialist crews responding - please continue to call 111 if you see smoke or fire."
