A grenade has been found on a property in Christchurch.

A member of the public alerted the police to the suspicious item, which Newshub understands was discovered in a garden, at about 7:30pm on Tuesday.

The bomb squad is at the scene on Geraldine St in Edgeware, and neighbouring houses have been evacuated. Cordons are in place.

The defence force is currently carrying out X-rays on the item.

The owner of the Avalon Motel has opened up a room for evacuated locals to use the bathroom and have a cup of tea.
