Kawerau bank robber 'a Mongrel Mob member on meth' - police

Police have confirmed the man shot after a pursuit in Kawerau was a patched Mongrel Mob member.

The 29-year-old man was fatally shot on Thursday morning after police were called to a "family harm incident", then a bank robbery that he was involved in.

Bay of Plenty District Commander Superintendent Andy McGregor told media the man was known to police.

He said police had put diversion tactics in place after a chase began, when the victim fled the scene of the bank robbery.

At around 10:20am, police say the man pulled over and pulled his gun on the pursuing officers.

Superintendent McGregor said it is then understood the man fired a shot before police shot back.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified, and an investigation has been opened.
