A 21-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a hit and run involving a teenager in Auckland.

The man allegedly drove his vehicle into a 15-year-old who was walking to school on Kepa Rd in Auckland's Mission Bay.

The incident happened on Thursday at around 6:50am, when the 21-year-old's vehicle allegedly mounted the footpath and struck down the teenager.

The 15-year-old sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, according to Snr Sgt Mark Miller of New Zealand Police.

It's understood the driver of the vehicle got out of the car after he hit the teenager, and then fled the scene.

According to police, two other people were in the vehicle at the time.

The 15-year-old was kept in hospital on Thursday night, and he's said to be making a good recovery with expectations he could be released on Friday.

The 21-year-old later handed himself in to police, and has since been charged with a number of driving-related charges.

He will appear in the Auckland District Court on Friday.
