Man shot dead by police after Kawerau bank robbery

A man shot by police after an armed bank robbery in Kawerau has died.

An armed offender held up First Credit Union on Fletcher Ave on Thursday morning.

Police were called to the scene just after 9am. They were also alerted to a "family harm incident" involving an armed offender.

Officers located a suspect in a vehicle believed to have been involved and tried to stop him, but he fled. Police gave chase down State Highway 30 for some time.

At about 10:20am the man stopped and police shot him. First aid was given immediately, according to Det Insp Mark Loper, but he did not survive.

Police are now investigating. A stretch of SH30 has been closed between Braemer Rd and Grieve Rd.

First Credit Union notified customers on Facebook the branch would be closed for the rest of the week.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified, and police are in touch with his family.
