New Plymouth man charged with threats to kill after 11-hour stand-off

A man has been charged with breach of bail and threats to kill after an 11-hour stand-off in New Plymouth on Sunday.

Police were called to a scene in Spotswood, New Plymouth at 10:15am on Sunday after what they believed was a family violence incident.

The 31-year-old accused was known to carry firearms and police said there was concern for the safety of others.

He refused to leave the address and the Armed Offenders Squad began negotiations in the afternoon to get him out.

Just before 9pm police entered the Spotswood address and arrested the man, ending the lengthy stalemate.

He is expected to appear in the New Plymouth District Court today.
