Police are investigating after shots appeared to be fired at police in the early hours of Saturday morning in Christchurch.

Just before 1am on Saturday, officers signalled for a driver to pull over due to the manner of their driving in Wainoni.

Officers pursued but pulled away after they saw what they believed to be shots fired through a window of the car towards police on Anzac Drive.

While nobody was injured, Supt Lane Todd, Canterbury Metro Commander, said the incident would be taken extremely seriously.

"Enquiries to locate the offender/s have been on-going today, and this has included a police presence in Anzac Drive," he said.

Police are calling for information from the public, and ask anyone who knows anything about the incident to call Christchurch police on 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 800 511.
