Two teenagers have been charged following a spate of car and petrol thefts across Southland over the past couple of days.

Police say the pair began their crime spree in Wigram, Christchurch, on Thursday.

"They have then been involved in a number of petrol drive-offs on their travels to Invercargill," said ConstWayne McClelland.

A first attempt at stopping the pair in Invercargill failed on Friday night when police abandoned the pursuit due to their "erratic driving".

Early on Saturday afternoon a stolen vehicle was spotted in Mataura, just south of Gore. Police believe it was being driven by the same pair they'd been chasing the night before, but again failed to pull them over.

Another attempt south of Winton also failed to put them in custody.

But after the vehicle was seen in Wallacetown, the pair were soon successfully apprehended in Riverton, 30km west of Invercargill.

The two men, aged 17 and 18, will appear in Invercargill District Court on Monday facing a number of theft and driving charges.
