Whakatane rattled by 4.9 magnitude quake

Whakatane has been rocked by a "moderate" 4.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday morning.

The quake struck at 8:55am, and was centred around 40km east of Te Araroa at a depth of 27km.

A map from Geonet shows where people felt the quake, with most responses appearing to come from Whakatane.

More than 70 people told GeoNet they felt the earthquake, most calling the shaking weak or light. One person called it moderate, and one person located in Canterbury called the shaking extreme.

Geonet called the quake "moderate".

A Whakatane civil defence spokesperson told Newshub they had not heard anything about the earthquake.
