The Auckland Marathon is being highly praised for adopting a wheelchair category.

It ran a successful pilot last year, and now it will be a permanent fixture.

Solicitor Laura Stuart has completed many wheelchair marathons, and says it's easy to facilitate.

"Essentially it's no different to holding a bike race - it's just wheels. People with wheelchairs racing the same way people on bikes race on the road, or run."

Stuart finished the New York marathon in a wheelchair, and says it's great to be part of a bigger team.

"Being able to do a sport and getting amongst other people in wheelchairs, inspiring each other, a bit of camaraderie is real fun. Boosts your confidence."

The event will take place on October 20. Entries are open now.

"It'll be great if all events could get on board," said Stuart. "I'd love to get back to Rotorua and do the Rotorua Marathon."
