An Auckland policeman has been charged with accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose.

The 30-year-old man from Auckland appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday.

"The charge was made as the result of a police self-initiated investigation process," says Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus.

"The officer has been stood down from duty and an employment investigation will follow in due course."

Police said they won't comment further.
