A paraglider who crash landed in a Canterbury ski field has spent the night walking to safety.

A helicopter failed to find the man last night at Mt Cheeseman after he called emergency services to say he had injured his leg just after 6pm.

Police say he arrived at Flock Hill Station about 10pm, and on Sunday morning was being checked by ambulance staff.

He's expected to "walk himself out", police told Stuff.
