The 46-year-old man charged over the deaths of three road workers near Whakatāne in February has been named.

David Michael Cox appeared in the Whakatāne District Court on Tuesday morning charged with careless driving causing the deaths of Haki Hiha, Dudley Soul Raroa and David Eparaima.

Judge Louis Bidois remanded Cox until April 17 when he will enter a plea.

The crash occurred on February 26 on State Highway 2 near Pikowai and involved four trucks, three of which were doing road maintenance at the time.

FIRST Union said they were horrified by the deaths following the crash.
