A navy sailor is in a critical condition in hospital after getting into trouble during a diver training exercise.

On Monday night, the Royal New Zealand Navy sailor was taking part in an advanced diver training exercise at the Devonport Navy Base when the incident occurred, according to a statement provided by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).

The exercise was taking place in roughly six to eight metres of water.

After first aid was given at the scene by colleagues and emergency services, the sailor was taken to North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
