The NZTA has issued a congestion warning for motorists using the Southern Motorway southbound after the Princes Street off-ramp, due to a spillage.

Two lanes have been cleared of debris, but the left lane is still blocked as the clean-up is completed.

They said congestion built quickly after metal debris blocked all three lanes at 1:40pm.

"Expect delays southbound from Ellerslie-Penrose."
