Police evacuated Britomart Train station after unatended luggage was found.

Police confirmed a backpack was left unattended.

It is believed the bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion.

The station is now open again and trains are running to schedule.

Superintendent Karyn Malthus, Auckland City District Commander told Newshub police were notified of an incident where two bags were located unattended on Galway Street in central Auckland this evening shortly after 5pm.

Cordons were put in place around the immediate area as a precaution and the Defence Force was notified.

A short time ago Defence Force personnel carried out a controlled explosion of the bags as a precautionary measure and the matter has been resolved.

Police can confirm the bags were not suspicious and contained scaffolding equipment.
