Spectacular Dunedin pipe burst creates geyser-like water surge

Footage has emerged of a water pipe bursting high into the air in the Dunedin suburb of Green Island.

The video shows the geyser-like water surge to great heights, with maintenance workers unable to stop the flow.

Dunedin resident Ange Elliot filmed the aftermath of the pipe burst on Tuesday.

"There was a big hole in the ground and the water was going metres above the power lines," she told Newshub.

Elliot says she saw a worker try to approach the pipe, but had to back off due to the force of the water.

She posted the video on a Dunedin community Facebook page, where many users confirmed they had also seen the surge of water, due to its height.

Dunedin Council has been approached for further comment.
