Video: Car bursts into flames on Auckland motorway

Emergency services are racing to a south Auckland motorway after a car burst into flames during rush hour.

Police say a crash occurred near the Puhinui Rd and Cavendish Dr on-ramps at 3:51pm. The accident was severe enough that the car ignited.

Witness Jaydon Beguely was driving past just as it happened and told Newshub there was "smoke everywhere".

Video he supplied to Newshub shows the blue vehicle pouring smoke into the air, while other motorists pull over and frantically race to help the occupants.

"People jumped out with fire extinguishers and someone was on the phone to the cops," he told Newshub.

"There would have been flames under the bonnet, and it would have gotten worse when they opened it."

Mr Beguely says he saw the driver "limping away from the car".

"It's understood the driver was able to get out safely and reportedly has minor injuries," a police spokesperson says.

"Motorists are advised to take an alternative route and to avoid the area if possible. Traffic is down to one lane and delays are expected."
