Anzac Day services could be cut over security fears

This year you may have to travel a little further to attend an Anzac Day service.

Police are advising local councils and RSAs to combine some commemorations to help with police resourcing while the country is on high security alert.

Police say they will have a visible presence across events on the day, and it's working to ensure that those services requiring a police presence are prioritised and police resources are deployed appropriately.

Auckland Council supports the move, saying it's working closely with the police and RSAs to "find the best solution". It says this won't affect individuals wanting to pay respects at sites of their choosing.

Some RSAs contacted by Newshub on Saturday said they had not heard of any changes and it would be business as usual this year.

Others did not want to comment on whether their service would be going ahead or if they were expecting a higher turnout.

It comes as New Zealand remains on high alert of a terror attack. Police say despite its precautions there is no information to indicate any threats to any Anzac services.

However in the current environment it's important people remain vigilant, and report anything suspicious or concerning.
