An Auckland police officer has been charged with dangerous driving during a car chase.

The 30-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Thursday.

He was charged following a review of a "fleeing driver incident" which he was allegedly involved in while on-duty.

Superintendent Karyn Malthus says the officer was "undertaking urgent driving duties" at the time of the pursuit. It's unknown when or where the chase took place, or what the nature of the defendant's dangerous driving was.

He's been placed on restricted duties for the time being.

Superintendent Malthus says police cannot comment further as the matter is before the courts.
