The body of a missing  man last seen at a Coromandel Peninsula beach has been found.

Gordon Nicholson, 62, went missing after heading to a blow hole near the south end of Whiritoa Beach on Tuesday, police believe.

He had been wearing tramping boots, shorts and carrying a medium-sized daypack.

His body was found by people on a recreational boat at 3:30pm on Saturday near Mayor Island in the Bay of Plenty.

"While formal identification is still to be carried out, we believe it is missing man Gordon Nicholson," a statement from police said.

Police send their condolences to his family and loved ones.
