Driver seriously injured after concrete truck rolls down a bank in Auckland

A truck driver has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Whitford, east Auckland.

At 1pm on Thursday, police and emergency services were called to Whitford Rd. A concrete truck had rolled, left the road, and gone down a bank near Mangemangeroa Gorge Bridge.

The driver of the truck was transported to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries. A police spokesperson confirmed the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

A witness told Stuff the truck hit the bridge, then scraped along the side and flipped over. Another said people at the scene helped the driver out of the truck, using a knife to cut his seatbelt.

"He was dazed and wasn't aware of day or time."

Part of Whitford Rd has been closed, and is expected to remain closed for several hours.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible, and diversions are in place.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.
