A Rotorua high school's lockdown is over after a bomb threat was received by police.

Students and staff at Western Heights High School were evacuated earlier on Tuesday.

They've now been released after the lockdown was lifted, the school says on its Facebook page.

Video taken at the scene during the emergency showed the school gates locked with emergency services on the school grounds.

A student told the Rotorua Daily Post they had been evacuated from the buildings.

"There is all 1300 of us located on the basketball courts and most of us have no idea what is going on," they said.

Fearful parents flocked to Facebook hoping their children are safe.

"Omg hope my boys ok," one person posted to on the schools page.

"Has happened three times since mine been there so processes are pretty ok," another said.
