As many as nine people have been injured in a crash north of Hamilton that left parts of the Waikato without power.

Police say they were called to Horsham Downs, near Ngaruawahia, just after 9am after reports of two cars colliding with a lamp post.

The crash caused an immediate power outage which, according to WEL Networks, affected approximately 1500 homes across Gordonton, Whitikahu, Horsham and Ngaruawahia.

While power has been restored to the vast majority of affected properties, there are a small number of residences still affected by the outage.

A police spokesperson says injuries from the crash range from abrasions to broken bones, but no one has died.
