Suspected Palmerston North gun thief Alan James Harris has been arrested, but police are still looking for the firearms.

Police announced on Friday 11 guns were stolen from the Palmerston North police station on Thursday morning.

A member of the public later identified Harris in Palmerston North's central city and he was arrested without incident on Saturday morning.

But police are still looking for the guns, and are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to find them.

"While an arrest has been made, it is very important that anyone with information which will assist us in locating the firearms makes contact with us," acting central district commander Sarah Stewart said.

"Anyone with information can contact the Palmerston North police directly on 0800 351 3600. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
