A 41-year-old man has been arrested after he made a threat on a Wellington bus.

The man was charged in relation to an outstanding warrant, and further charges are likely.

He will appear in Wellington District Court on Thursday.

Part of Willis Street in Wellington's CBD was closed down after the man made the threat.

Police were called to the incident at 5.20pm on Wednesday.

The street was closed between Mercer Street and Lambton Quay, and people were asked to avoid the area.

Wellington police are asking anyone who was on the bus at the time to contact them at dcc.wellington@police.govt.nz , if they haven't already.

A woman who was on the bus when the threat occurred says the man was one of the homeless men local to the area.

"He was upset and by the sounds of things very drunk," she posted on Facebook.

"Police and our driver on the Rongotai number 3 handled it very quickly and were calm with everyone in the surrounding areas and the man himself," she told Newshub.
