The sky's the limit: Aeroplane cockpit up for sale on Trade Me

It could be the ultimate Airbnb - a real plane's cockpit and cabin for sale on Trade Me.

The owner bought it for his kids as an upgrade on a slide, and it has been the ultimate childhood den - but now his wife wants her Māngere Bridge backyard back.

When Josh Gabor first saw the plane arrive in his backyard, he was shocked. It was the coolest present he'd ever received.

"It was one of the times in your life when you're really, really happy and really surprised too," he said.

When Josh's dad bought it, the vital instruments were removed and the wings and tail lopped off - but it was full of gadgets.

As a result, for almost two years, Josh has been one of the most popular kids in his class.

"It's definitely fun just having your friends over and just seeing their reactions," Josh said.

But Josh's parents have decided now's the time for their beloved plane to fly the coop - or at least get craned out.

Built in 1981, the Westwind has a fully kitted-out cockpit. One of the first business jets available for charter here in New Zealand, it was fitted with all the mod cons.

It's the height of luxury travelling, but jets got faster and flashier, and fashions changed. Josh's dad bought it from a hangar where it had been sitting idle.

The plane's catching a tail wind on Trade Me, with nearly 800 watch-listing the auction.

The

reserve hasn't been met yet, but there are still three days to go. With another flight of the imagination, it will begin its third life - but as what?

Well, the sky's the limit.
