A Timaru wrestling coach has been arrested and charged with indecent assault, police say.

The charge relates to an incident involving an 11-year-old boy, Stuff reports. Peter Charles Berry has abandoned his bid for name suppression after he was arrested on April 10.

The 56-year-old appeared in the Timaru District Court on Tuesday facing one charge of indecent assault on a boy under 12, two charges of indecent communication with a young person under 16, and unlawfully possessing a restricted firearm.

He was refused bail and has been remanded in custody until May 9.

Stuff reports Berry met the alleged victim through the South Canterbury Olympic Wrestling Club, where he is a coach, and that the abuse allegedly took place between January and April.

Police are now appealing for more information from the public about Berry's alleged offending.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested said the inquiry is ongoing and it's possible there are other victims.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Detective Sergeant Greg Harrison on 021 190 3831, or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
