A honey factory south of Hamilton has been destroyed after a fire tore through the building.

Fire crews are still at Bees Inn Apiaries in Ohaupo after arriving at the scene just after 11pm.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub nine fire crews, four tankers and four support vehicles battled the blaze.

State Highway 3 was closed as fire crews had to lay hoses across the road, but has now reopened.

Crews are currently dampening down hotspots and a fire investigator is looking into the cause.

Environment Waikato has been on site to assist with the runoff.
